How to Choose Interior Paint Colors You Won't Regret

Almost every color regret we hear about comes from the same mistake: choosing from a two-inch paint chip under fluorescent store lighting. That chip tells you almost nothing about how the color will behave on four walls in your actual house.

Start with sample pots, not chips. Paint a two-foot square on at least two different walls in the room — one that gets direct sun and one that stays in shadow. North-facing rooms in central North Carolina pull colors cooler and grayer; south-facing rooms warm everything up. The same beige can read as cream on one wall and pink on another in the same room.

Then live with it for a few days. Look at your samples in morning light, at midday, and under your lamps at night. Warm LED bulbs will push a cool gray toward green, and that is exactly the kind of surprise you do not want to discover after the whole room is painted.

Pick your sheen deliberately, because sheen changes the color. Flat hides wall imperfections beautifully but scuffs easily, which makes it a poor choice for hallways and kids' rooms. Eggshell and satin are the workhorses for living areas — washable without being shiny. Semi-gloss belongs on trim, doors, and bathrooms where moisture and cleaning are constant.

One more thing worth knowing: the darker and more saturated the color, the more your wall prep shows. Deep navies and charcoals highlight every seam, nail pop, and roller mark. If you want a dramatic color, budget for the drywall repair and priming that make it look right.
